How We Handle Your Data

This statement covers both the website messlog.de and the application messLOG. The two process different data. Where that is the case, it is marked at the start of the section:

  • [Website] - applies only to the information site
  • [Calculator] - applies only to the application, that is, the signed-in area
  • no marking - applies to both

Which law applies

We are based in Switzerland. The Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP), in the version in force since 1 September 2023, therefore applies to us first and foremost.

Because our offering is expressly aimed at businesses in the European Economic Area as well — the site is available in German, English, French and Polish, and our servers are located in Germany — the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applies in addition. Under its Article 3(2) it also covers providers outside the EU as soon as they address people within the EU.

Where GDPR articles are cited below, processing subject to Swiss law alone is governed by the corresponding principles of the FADP — in particular good faith, proportionality, purpose limitation and data security under Articles 6 and 8 FADP.

What we do not do: no advertising, no sale of data, no audience measurement, no profiling, no automated decision-making producing legal effects for you.

Your IP address

Neither the website nor the application stores your IP address in plain text. It is combined with a secret additional value and turned into a one-way checksum (SHA-256). The address cannot be derived from that checksum, and without the secret value the checksum cannot be reproduced either.

We need it in two places: to detect whether an unusual number of form enquiries is arriving from the same connection within a short time, and to throttle repeated failed sign-in attempts. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in protection against misuse (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

This is separate from the server logs kept by our host — the address is recorded there without our being able to influence it. See below.

[Website] Enquiry via the form

When you request trial access or write to us via the contact form, we store:

  • your name and, if given, your company
  • your email address and, if given, your telephone number
  • your message
  • the language you were using on the site — so that we reply in the same language
  • the time of the enquiry
  • the checksum of your IP address described above

The purpose is to deal with your enquiry. The legal basis is the taking of steps at your request prior to entering into a contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR) and our legitimate interest in answering enquiries (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

We delete the details once the enquiry has been dealt with conclusively and no statutory retention periods stand in the way, and after two years at the latest.

[Calculator] Access

Access is by access code or by email address and password. For this we store your name, email address, the password solely as a one-way checksum, the date the account was created and the time of the last sign-in. The access code is checked in order to unlock the areas and is assigned to your account.

The legal basis is performance of the user relationship (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).

[Calculator] Your calculations

Projects you save are held under your account: project name, the calculator selected and the values you have entered. They are visible only to you and to the administration.

You can delete your projects yourself at any time — they are then removed from the database, without having to go through us.

Which values you enter is up to you. Please do not enter personal data in project names or input fields where the calculation does not require it.

[Calculator] AI assistant

Use of the AI assistant is voluntary. Without it, all calculators work unchanged.

If you do use it, your question is transmitted, together with specialist background texts and the name of the calculator currently open, to our processor Anthropic PBC, San Francisco, USA and processed there. This constitutes a transfer to the United States, safeguarded by standard contractual clauses.

On our own systems we store, for billing and to guard against misuse, only the time, your account, the calculator that was open, the model used and the size of the request. Neither your question nor the answer is stored by us. We are therefore unable to read back what you asked.

The legal basis is your consent, given by actively using the function (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR). Please still refrain from entering trade secrets in the chat that do not belong there — the question goes to Anthropic in any case.

[Calculator] PDF output

The PDF is generated on your device and stored there. It is not transmitted to us.

Emails we send

For every email we send — the reply to an enquiry, the delivery of an access code — we record the recipient address, the subject, the time and whether it was sent successfully. This serves solely to trace faults when a message fails to arrive. We delete these records after 90 days.

Cookies and local storage

We use no cookies for advertising, tracking or audience measurement. No analytics tools are in use — no Google Analytics, no Matomo, nothing comparable.

The following storage is technically necessary. It is required for operation and therefore does not need consent.

NameWherePurposeDuration
langWebsite (cookie)remembers your choice of language; contains only the language code, such as “de”1 year
obetweb_sidWebsite (cookie)holds the session together when you submit a form; contains only a random identifieruntil the browser is closed
rememberWebsite (cookie)administration area only, if “stay signed in” was chosen30 days
obet-schemaWebsite (local storage)remembers light or dark appearanceuntil you delete it
PHPSESSIDCalculator (cookie)keeps you signed in; contains only a random identifieruntil you sign out
lang, themeCalculator (local storage)remember your language and appearanceuntil you delete them

Anything held in your browser’s local storage stays on your device and is never transmitted to our server. Cookies, by contrast, are sent with every request — which is why they are listed here individually.

Fonts and third-party content

All typefaces are served from our own server. No Google Fonts, no content delivery networks (CDNs), no map services and no embedded third-party content are loaded. Simply visiting our pages therefore transmits your IP address to no third party — apart from our host, which delivers the pages technically.

Hosting and server logs

Our pages are hosted by netcup GmbH, Karlsruhe, Germany. The provider processes the log data arising from your visit on our behalf, in order to deliver and secure the service. A data processing agreement is in place with them. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in secure and reliable operation (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Each time a page is requested, the web server automatically records:

  • the date and time of access
  • the address requested
  • the HTTP status code, such as 200 or 404
  • the volume of data transferred
  • the IP address of the requesting device
  • browser and operating system (user agent)
  • the page visited beforehand, where transmitted (referrer)

These logs serve technical delivery, stability and the detection of faults and attacks. They are not combined with other sources and are not evaluated for advertising or audience measurement.

Retention: 30 days at most, after which they are deleted automatically. Where there is a specific suspicion of misuse, individual records may be kept longer until the matter has been clarified.

Disclosure to third parties

Disclosure takes place only where necessary for operation or required by law:

  • netcup GmbH, Germany — hosting, under a data processing agreement
  • Anthropic PBC, USA — only when the AI assistant in the calculator is used
  • the provider of our email mailbox, for sending our replies

Data is not sold.

Data security

Transmission is encrypted via HTTPS. Passwords are stored only as one-way checksums, IP addresses only as checksums. Access to the administration area is protected by sign-in and by throttling of repeated failed attempts.

Your rights

You have the right to information about the data processed concerning you, to rectification, to erasure, to restriction of processing, to receive or transfer your data, and to object to processing based on a legitimate interest. Consent once given — for the AI assistant, for instance — may be withdrawn at any time with effect for the future.

These rights are yours both under Articles 25 to 32 FADP and under Articles 15 to 21 GDPR.

Please contact admin@messlog.ch. We normally reply within a few working days.

You may also lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority:

  • in Switzerland, with the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) in Bern
  • within the EU, with the data protection authority of your country of residence

Liability for results

The calculators provide indicative values based on the figures you enter. We give no warranty as to the accuracy of the results and accept no liability for damage arising from their use. Check every result against the actual conditions of your plant.

Changes to this statement

We adapt this statement when the processing changes. The version published here at any given time is the one that applies.
